Just as we need to keep our weight within reason with our height and gender, likewise, we need to be kind to our pets. Pets mirror the habits of their owners. Oops, you may not have wanted to read that statement.

If you are like me, you want to have your pets for as long as possible. We need to be aware of foods, ingredients, and supplements that are not good for the health or the weight of our pets.

Do you read the ingredients list on the pet food packages? If your pet is overweight, you may wish to consider natural remedies for cats and dogs as an alternative for healthier foods and care for your pet.

Also as you learn about natural remedies, you will have control of the food ingredients. There will be little concern for artificial coloring agents, artificial flavoring, and preservatives which may possibly be the food ingredients that are causing allergies, weight gain, and other pet ailments.

Every living thing likes to eat. Our pets are not able to roam freely as they once did years ago. It has become our responsiblity to take care of these animals because they lost that freedom. On the other hand they also live longer with human intervention.

Do you know how often to feed your puppy or dog? Puppies need to be fed three or four times a day. Adult dogs feed twice a day. Kittens and cats are fed frequently. There is no particular pattern for their feeding times.

Did you ever notice that when you miss a meal you double or triple your portion of food at the next seating because you got so hungry? After you have eaten, you feel very uncomfortable and you let our your waist belt two or three notches along with a big belch.

Unfortunately, for some fo the larger breeds of dogs, if you overfeed them one large meal a day their stomachs could bloat. This is dangerous as the stomach will expand putting added pressure on other internal organs and it can be very hazardous to their health. Dogs are not able to belch or have diarrhea or vomiting on demand to relieve undue pressure.

Have you ever noticed how some dog owners will take their pet for a walk or run after eating? These owners have good intentions of exercising their pet, however, it is advisable to let your pet rest for a while after eating.

Most pet foods on the market have a base of soybean, rice, or corn. For added dollars, meats of chicken, beef, or lamb are added. For added nutrition, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals are added.

The energy ingredients of the dry kibbles are the protein, carbohydrates, and fats, great for very active dogs. The less active dog or the older dog requires less of the protein and fats. The labeling on the packages will let you know what recipes and the portion amount recommended in accordance with activity level.

Energy levels are based on the condition and physical activity of the dog. Lactating bitches, working canines, or level and intensity of exercises will determine serving portion.

Avoid group feedings. Separate dogs from cats. Cat food is richer in protein and fats than is needed for dogs.

Pets need their own clean feeding dish and fresh water bowl. It is also suggested not to have young children present when pets are dining. It is time for the pets to eat and enjoy their meal, which takes ten to twenty minutes.

When feeding your dogs train them to sit before receiving their food as this will eliminate changing the food dish and possibly causing injury to yourself.

Do you like snack foods?

Much of the overweight poundage in our pets is caused by snack foods. Yep, we sit down, watch television, and fill our mouths with fatty delights. And there is your precious dog looking at you with big beautiful eyes begging for your snack. You cannot resist that pitiful look and so you share with your pet.

One day, you notice that your dog has no waistline and can barely walk or play because it has become obese. Shame on you! Worse, when you take your precious pet to the vet more than likely it will be diagnosed as a diabetic. You just lost your human snacks because of the vet bill and the medicines and pet food readjustments that will be need to recapture health. Too many treats! Dogs do not need pizza, cookies, French fries, doughnuts, cakes and pies.

Considering the economy of today, you want to do your best to maintain health for your pet with as many natural remedies as you can to prevent illnesses.
